Carlos Barbieri

About Me

Carlos Barbieri is an accomplished energy executive with over 40 years of expertise in oil, gas, and new energy projects, as well as asset management. He has served as NBD and Commercial Manager for South America at Shell Exploration and Production, and previously at Petroleos de Venezuela. Throughout his career, he has delivered significant value results in commercial new business, strategy, technical, and operational domains. Carlos has demonstrated success in assessing, negotiating, and completing new business development deals with international governments, NOCs, and IOCs in over 10 countries, totaling more than $1 billion in diverse projects encompassing exploration and development, origination, and divestments. His leadership extends to country entries, deep advocacy, and strategic engagements at the senior level, covering critical aspects such as fiscal terms, international arbitrage, development plans, export volumes, and prices to ensure long-term sustainability and value generation. As an Asset Manager responsible for entities producing over 130 thousand barrels of oil a day, Carlos oversaw budgets totaling $400 million/year, leading teams of 350 employees in technical, operational, and maintenance areas. He played a pivotal role in designing the country's exploration strategy, leading to discoveries of over 25 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Carlos has also managed exploration offshore projects with a budget of $350 million and spearheaded technology development and implementation, particularly in Extra heavy oil. Carlos holds a petroleum engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
